CVD - Diuretics Flashcards
Thiazides - how do they work?
They inhibit sodium Reabsorption at DVT
When to give Thiazides?
Early in the day to avoid sleep problems
Thiazide and Loop diuretics electrolyte imbalances and other imbalance?
Hypokalaemia
Hyponatraemia
Hypomagnesaemia
Hypotension
What diuretic exacerbated diabetes/Gout?
Loop & Thiazides
How long do thiazides last and why’s that good?
24 hrs so best to take early in the day - reduces elderly fall
How long do Loop diuretics last?
6 hours so given BD (avoids sleep interference)
Loop diuretics mechanism of action?
Inhibit reabsorption of sodium, potassium and chloride at loop of henle
Therefore causes hypokalaemi, Hyponatraemia
Loop diuretics mechanism of action?
Inhibit reabsorption at loop of henle
Potassium sparing diuretics mechanism of action?
Prevents sodium reabsorption at DVT collecting duct and helps retain potassium
Therefore sodium lost = Hyponatraemia
Potassium retained = Hyperkalaemia
Specific group of potassium sparing diuretics which is the class spiralactone is from?
Aldosterone Antagonists
What colour urine does Potassium sparing diuretics cause?
Blue urine
Two other side effects of potassium sparing diuretics to know?
Libido change & Breast pain tenderness
Spironlactone/loop diuretics interaction with Lithium?
It Reduces lithium secretion
Loop & Aminoglycosides interactions?
Nephrotoxicity & Ototoxicity
Which diuretics cause hypokalaemia?
Loop & Thiazides
