Contrast in Radiology Flashcards
How is contrast positive contrast and negative contrast observed?
Positive contrast: white
Negative contrast: black (due to increased attenuation)
What are usually positive contrasts?
Metals
Iodinated or not iodinated (barium sulfate)
What are usually negative contrasts?
Inert gases (O2, CO2)
What contrast is used for X-ray examination of the intestine tract?
Barium sulfate
Not so much used in CT
Is the absorption of iodine contrast media fast or slow?
Fast the peak of plasma concentration occurs within seconds.
What contrast is used for ultrasound cardiac assessment?
Gas microbubbles
Sulfur hexafluoride and Octafluoropropane
What phase is used in more CT protocols?
Redestribution phase
When are dynamic studies used?
Brain studies after an stroke
At what time is the excretory phase measured?
After 10 minuts
