Circulation: Circulatory shock Flashcards
What is circulatory shock
Circulatory failure causing poor perfusion of vital organs
What does normal blood pressure rely on
Enough blood in system
Smooth muscle in vessels having ‘tone’
Heart pumping blood
How does the body detect blood pressure and oxygen
2 carotid bodies sense partial pressure of oxygen
2 carotid sinuses respond to blood pressure
What are the 3 main causes of shock
- Hypovolaemic
- Septic
- Cardiogenic
- other
What is hypovolaemic shock
Low bp due to reduction in amount of blood in circulation
High pulse- physiological response to low bp
What is cardogenic shock
Heart fails
No longer pumps enough blood to maintain bp
What is septic shock
Eg septicaemia
Causes blood wide vasodilation = pooling of blood
Not enough blood goes to rest of body
What are some complications of shock
- Decreased perfusion of brain
- Decreased perfusion of kidneys
What is the normal bp
120/80
What are the physiological responses to low bp
Sympathetic nervous system stimulated causes:
Increased vascular tone in limbs
Adrenal glands secrete adrenaline-> hearts pumps faster
