Anatomy week 16 skull Flashcards
Explain the neurocranium + its function
- Neurocranium , makes up the largest part of the skull
- Protects the brain
Name the 2 parts that the skull can be split into
- Neurocranium
- Viscerocranium
Explain the viscerocranium
- What it includes
- Inludes the lower jaw and thion walled bones of the facial skeleton
Name all the bones that the neurocranium contains
- Frontal
-Parietal
-Occipital - Temporal
-Sphenoid bone
-Ethmoid
Name the bones that the viscerocranium contais
- Mandible
-Maxilla
-Zygomatic
-Lacrimal
-Nasal
-Palatine
-Inferior Nasal concha
-Vomer
Explain the structure of the Frontal lobe + what it forms
- Unpaired, shell-shaped bone foroming the anterosuperior cranium
Name the 3 parts of the Frontal Lobe
-Squamous part
- Orbital Parts X2
- Nasal part
Explain the functions of the supraorbital Margin
Supraorbital Foramen In the Frontal Lobe
- Seperates the squamous and orbital parts
-A passage for subraorbital vessels and nerves
Explain the structure of the parietal bone + what it forms
- The parietal bones are bilateral skull bones that form the superior and lateral walls of the cranium
Name the three parts of the occipital bone
- Squamous
- Condylar
-Basilar
What is located inferiorly on the occipital bone
-Occipital condyles which articulate with C1
What does the condylar part of the Occipital bone contain
- 2 occipital condyles
What lies posterior to the condyles in the occipital bone
- Condyloid fossa
What is the external surface of the occipital bone marked by
superior & inferior nuchal lines.
What does the occipital bone form
Posterior cranial fossa at the skull base
Name the 2 foramina in the occipital bone
-Foramen magnum
-Condylar canals
( partly Jugular foramen)
What are the Temporal bones- what does it form
Paired bones that from the middle and posterior cranial fossae
What are the 3 parts of the Temporal bone
- Squamous Part
-Petromastoid Part - Tympanic part
Explain the 3 parts of the temporal bone form
1. What it forms
2+ 3 , what it encloses
-Squamos : Forms the lateral skull
-Petromastoid Part: Encloses the middle and inner ear
- Tympanic part: Encloses the external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane
Name the 3 processes of the Temporal bone
- Mastoid process
- Zygomatic process
- Styloid process
Name the 4 foraminas ( openings) of the temporal bone)
- Internal acoustic meatus
-External acoustic meatus
-Carotid canal
-Stylomastoid foramen
What does the Sphenoid bone form
- Posterior orbit, middle cranial fossa floor, lateral skull wall
What does the sphenoid contain
-Great and lesser wings
Explain what the greater and lesser wings form in the sphenoid bone
Greater wings form: The middle cranial fossa, lateral skull walls
Lesser wings form the : Posterior anterior cranial fossa
What does the sphenoid body enlcose in the sphenoid bone
- Sphenoid sinus
What do the Pterygoid process in the sphenoid bone project inferiorly with
- Medial pterygoid plate
-Lateral pterygoid plate
What does the ethmoid bone form (4)
- Anterior cranial fossa
- Medial orbital
-Nasal septum
-Laterl nasal walls
What is the function of the perpendicular plate in the ethmoid bone
- Contriubtes to the nasal septum
Name the 2 processes of the Ethmoid bone
- Crista galli
-Superio and medial nasal concha
What do the ethmoid air cells form
Ethmoid sinuses
What does the maxillary bone form
- Upper jaw and parts of the nose
Name the 2 processes of the maxillary bone
- Palatine process
-Frontal processes
Name the 1 foramen that the maxillary bone contains
- Infraorbital foramen
What does the mandible connect to
Ramus
Name the 2 processes in the mandible
- Coronoid process
-Condylar process
Name the 2 Foramens in the mandible
- Mental foraman(external)
- Manidbular foramen(Internal)
What does the nasal bones form
- Bridge of the nose
What does the zygomatic bones form
- Cheekbones
What does the vomer form
- Inferior and posterior nasal spetum
What is tempromandibular joint formed by
- Mandible and Temporal bone
What are the articulating surfaces of the temporomandibular covered by
- Fibrocartilage
Name the articulating surfaces of the temporomandibular
- Mandibular fossa
-Articular tubercle
-Head of the mandible
