20.2 Interactions in Ecological Communites Flashcards
What is an Ecological Community?
An association of interacting populations that inhabit a defined area
What is Intraspecific Competition?
The competition for limited resources among members of the same species
What type of factor is Intraspecific Competition?
A density dependant factor
Why do parents and offspring not compete?
Because some produce offspring that develop further away and some offspring use different resources than their parents
What is interspecific competition?
Competition that occurs between members of different species in the same community
What is an ecological niche?
All the biotic and abiotic factors required for an organism to survive
What is Protective Coloration?
A type of body coloration as a natural defence mechanism
What is Mullerian Mimicry?
When an organism will mimic the poisonous effects of another organism to prevent predators
What is Symbiosis?
The direct or close relationship between individuals of different species
What is Commensalism?
A symbiotic relationship in which one partner benefits and the other neither benefits nor is harmed
What is Parasitism?
When one partner benefits at the expense of their host
What is Succession?
The sequence of invasion and replacement of species in an ecosystem overtime
What is Primary Succession?
When no soil is present
What is Pioneer Community?
When the first species begin to colonise the area and soil starts to form
What is the Climax Community?
The last stage in succession where plant life is stable
