12.1 Flashcards
What do the senses do?
Transmit sensory information in the form of electrochemical impulses to the brain
What are sensory receptors?
The nerve endings and cells that detect sensory information
What do sensory receptors initiate?
Nerve impulses
When does sensation occur?
When neural impulses arrive at the cerebral cortex
Where are neural impulses that begin at the optic nerve sent?
To the visual areas of the cerebral cortex
What is perception a result of?
How the cerebral cortex interprets the meaning of sensory information
What is sensory adaptation?
The brain’s ability to filter the massive amount of sensory information
What are the 4 categories of sensory receptors?
Photoreceptor
Chemoreceptor
Mechanoreceptors
Thermoreceptors
What is each sensory receptor able to do?
Convert energy from a specific stimulus into electrochemical energy which can be proceed at the nervous system
What does light energy stimulate?
Photoreceptors
What do the eyes contain?
Photoreceptor called rods and cones that absorb light and allow us to experience color
What are chemoreceptors stimulated by?
Certain chemicals ex. smell, taste
What do Mechanoreceptors do?
Respond to mechanical forces from some form of pressure ex. Hair cells in the ear
What do thermoreceptors do?
Detects heat and cold
