Command will initially handle the media, but should establish an Information Sector once feasible. What should the media do while waiting?
Stage in a safe location outside barrier tape.
Where should the PIO position themselves?
Visible accessible location adjacent to command post marked with a green light to meet with media.

What guidelines should the PIO consider to make for a good report?
1: Add anything to the basic info that will enhance the story (Extremely hazardous situation, a rescue, person company that did an outstanding job)
2: Personal interview with member encouraged
3: Don’t be afraid to talk but make sure info is accurate
4: Emphasize situation is tentative
If reporters are keeping you from gathering info what alternatives can you use?
1: Have them gather in one place tell them you will return shortly
2: Request additional resources from command to stay with reporters
3: Have them begin to get pics and videos in a safe location
4: Get a phone number to call them if they have deadlines
5: DO NOT RELEASE NAMES OF INJURED
What must PIO do to before taking reporters on a tour of area?
Get permission from command, operations, investigator, and property owner.
What if media create a safety problem?
Ask them to move in a positive way, avoid confrontation. Our policy is to cooperative with media.
What is the Media Alert Line?
A closed loop phone system with media
What info is the media usually interested in?
1: Amount of units
2: Response time, and time taken to stabilize
3: First unit on scene and actions
4: Injury, age, where taken for treatment (no names)
5: Specific hazards, and bust in protection measures (sprinkler)
6: Amount of loss dollar amount or adjective (heavy moderate)
7: Cause
8: Joint agency and how we worked together (JIC)
9: Have a single PIO who gets permission from command
What are additional PIO duties?
1: Communicate daily with media
2: Research statistic for media stories
3: Public services announcements
4: Award ceremonies
5: News releases
6: Consult senior staff before releasing info
7: Master of ceremonies
8: Accurate info for internal and external use
When is Welfare Sector established?
Serious injury or fatality both on and off duty. Should be a Chief officer
What positions within the Survivor Action Team?
1: Hospital Liaison
2: Family Liaison
3: Funeral Officer (funeral home, chaplain, cemetery)
4: Procession Officer
5: On Duty BC
6: Superintendent form Resource (provide necessary resources)
7: Labor (Pallbearers, ushers, meals etc)
8: PIO
What are Welfare Sectors responsibilities?
1: Notify Chiefs, PIO, Chaplain, CISM, Labor
2: Secure the scene with investigator and PD
3: Direct PIO to hold name until family notified
4: Have safety and city safety rep respond
5: Take possessions of FF equipment on scene
6: Gather info and take pics about circumstances
7: Assign personnel and wellness to gather personal data on member
8: Secure personal effects
9: Establish a record of actions provide to Survivor Action officer
10: Activate CISM
