1 Antihistamine Flashcards
1
Q
histamines
A
- organic nitrogenous compound involved in inflammatory response
- stored in mast cells and basophils
2
Q
histamine functions
A
- increases capillary permeability
- neurotransmitter in CNS
- concentrated in skin, lungs, GI tract
3
Q
GI-tract specific histamine effects
A
- smooth muscle constriction
- increased gastric acid secretion
- nausea, vomiting
4
Q
H1 antagonists… what do they do!??!
A
they PROTECT at receptor site
they do NOT prevent release of histamines
5
Q
antihistamine indications
A
- allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis
- urticaria
- allergic reactions
- motion sickness
- insomnia
6
Q
antihistamine contraindications
A
children < 2 years of age
7
Q
antihistamine side effects
A
- anticholinergic effects
- sedative effects
- CNS effects (falls! driving!)
8
Q
cholinergic receptors stimulate…
A
(acetylcholine receptors)
parasympathetic nervous system
9
Q
Benadryl
A
Diphenhydramine, H1 antagonist
10
Q
Benadryl contraindications
A
< 2 yo due to decreased BBB development
11
Q
Benadryl side effects
A
Decreased SLUD aka anticholinergic effects
Sedation
CNS effects
12
Q
Benadryl inappropriate use
A
Asthma attack
Third trimester
BPH (due to urinary retention)
REMEMBER SEDATION EFFECTS
