How do you measure height, head and chest circumference on an infant?
- lay on paper-covered table
- height: mark top of head and heel of flexed foot
- head: measure across eyebrows
- chest: under arms
What is BMI?
body mass index
- correlates risk factors
What does a BMI of over 40 indicate?
high risk for diabetes and heart problems
What other body measurements could be recorded?
- diameter of limb (difference?)
- wound, bruises
- adult’s abdominal girth
What measurements determine BMI?
height and weight
Is pulse oximetry a vital sign?
no
What does pulse oximetry measure?
oxygen in the blood and pulse reading
Where do we attach the probe for pulse oximetry?
finger or earlobe
What happens if the patient is wearing nail polish during pulse oximetry?
ask them to remove it (test answer)
- can attach to earlobe instead
