Q

List the advantages of asexual over sexual reproduction in plants

A

Asexual
Simpler/ faster process
Doesn’t depend on outside agents
One parents involved, divide by mitosis

sexual
Complex/ slower process
Depends on outside agents
Two parents involved, divide by meiosis

Q

List the advantages of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction

A

Asexual reproduction
All identical to parent cell
More competition and overcrowding
More susceptible to the same disease

sexual reproduction
Unidentical to each other - variation
Less competition and overcrowding
More resistant to disease

Q

Name and describe methods of natural vegetative propagation AND LIST EXAMPLES

A

Stem- Runner form horizontal stems, buds form at nodes and new plants form
Eh. Strawberry
Root-Root tuberswollen underground root, new plants grow
Eg.sweet potato
Leaf-Plantletsform on edge of leaf
Eg. Begonia
Bud- Bulb modified leaf swollen with food die stimulates many new buds to develop, main bud develops leaves
Eg onion

Q

Name and describe methods of artificial vegetative propagation

A
  1. Cuttings
    - stem cutting dipped in rooting power and allowed to form new roots and shoots

2.Grafting
- combining favourable qualities from different plants
( the shoot (scion) of one plant attached to the root system ( stock) of another plant

3.Layering
- a branch of parent stem bent over and covered with soil. The covered parts (if they have a node) forms roots and the tip forms a shoot

  1. Micropropagatin
-Many plants grow from small plant pieces, growth takes place on a sterile nutrient medium( this is an example of tissue culturing)
