Cell Components Flashcards
Cell membrane
Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins
Nucleus
Controls the activity’s of the cell, definite number of chromosomes made from dna and protein
Nuecleous
Appears as a dark circle in the nucleus.makes ribosomes
Ribosomes
Tiny round structures made of rRNA and proteins. Turns mRNA into proteins
Cytoplasm
Fluid containing many cell structures. The liquid component is called the cytosol
Mitochondria
Enclosed in a double membrane. Contain many infoldings called cristae.
Supplies energy to cells. Site of aerobic respiration
Chloroplasts
Green, produce glucose through photosynthesis
Cell wall
Made of cellulose, protects and supports the cell
Prokaryotic cells
Eg: bacteria
Do not have membrane bond organelles
Usually smaller
Eukaryotic cells
Larger than prokaryotic cells
Have nucleus
contain membrane bound organelles
What is a tissue
A tissue of a group of similar cells that carry out the same function
Name two plant tissues and it’s adaption
Dermal tissue surrounds and enclosed plants to protect the plants
Ground tissueprovides support. Photosynthesis occurs in the ground tissue of the leaves
Name two types of animal tissue and it’s adaptive use
Connective tissuejoins and supports other parts of the body, consist of cells within a matrix (cartilage)
nervous tissue composed of nerve cells called neurons.carry electrical impulses around the nervous tissue
What is Tissue culture
The growth of tissues on an artificial sterile medium outside of an organism (in-vitro growth)
For in-vitro growth, it needs
Correct nutrients
Suitable PH
Oxygen
