Vascular Infections Flashcards
what does bacteraemia mean
not a diagnosis - bacteria has been detected in the blood
what is required to be described as a blood stream infection
bacteraemia and symps of infection
what are the three types of bacteriemia
transient - no of bacteria slowing increasing in blood
intermittent - appear and reappear such as pneumonia or meningitis
continuous - number of bacteria same and continuously detected
what type of bacteraemia are vascular infections and give examples
continuous
endocarditis, infected DVT
what infection type is CRBSI
intravascular Catheter related bloodstream infection
what are the two main types of bacteria that use CRBSI route
coagulase negative staph - 31% (epidermis)
staph aureus - 20%
how many hours are needed from a blood stream sample to diagnosis bacteraemia infection
more than 2 hours
what is the presentation of infective endocarditis
non-specific - lethargy, malaise, weight loss
heart failure - SOB, PND
FROM JANE - symps
what are the main bacteria that cause infective endocarditis
staph or strep
what is the management of infective endocarditis
flucloxacillin
drain pus, surgery on valves
what is a mycotic aneurysm
aneurysms resulting from infection or microorganisms
what is the presentation of mycotic aneurysm
systemic symtoms - no localising symptoms
painless swelling
symps caused by rupture
what the cause diagnosis and management of mycotic aneurism
salmonella spp, s. aureus, E coli etc
diagnose with imaging and detect bacteria in tissue
surgical removal or stenting
how do you get an infected DVT
DVT’s seeded with bacteria with bacteraemia or directly from IV drug use (IVDU)
what is the presentation, cause and management of infected DVT
signs of DVT and systemic infection - can give respiratory symps
common due to s aureus or strep
antibiotics plus anticoagulation
