How many times has the Poás volcano erupted
The volcano has erupted about 40 times since 1928. It is active almost continuously.
What is near the Poás volcano
An interesting feature of the Poás volcano is that there are two crater lakes near the summit.
the Laguna Caliente
One of the lakes, the northern one, is known as the Laguna Caliente, or hot lagoon. It is one of the world’s most acidic lakes. It’s so acidic, in fact, that people can’t swim there. The bottom of both lakes is covered with sulfur. I
fumaroles
These are openings on the crust of the planet that emit steam and gases.
People think the smoke they see rising from the lake is the volcano spewing ash, but that’s not the case. What is it then
The smoke you see over the lake is actually water vapor mixed with acid fog. The water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam.
We’ve all heard of how damaging acid rain can be to the vegetation of the planet, right? Well, at Poás Volcano National Park you can actually see the effects of acid rain. Elaborate
The fumaroles at Poás produce acid fogs and rains with a high content of sulfur. As a result, part of the vegetation has been wiped out near the summit, and some areas are covered with unusual, stunted trees that have adapted to this acid rain.
They don’t allow camping inside the Poás Volcano National Park, but we were able to find a place to camp out nearby. And we took hiking tours to the crater. There are various trails that you can take to get to the top of the volcano and see the crater. The trails take you through the cloud forest, teeming with many species of birds, including
hummingbirds and the clay-colored robin, which is Costa Rica’s national bird. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the most famous bird in Central America: the resplendent quetzal.
