Horacio Quiroga
e Latin American author, Horacio Quiroga. Quiroga was born in 1878 in Uruguay, but lived most of his life in Argentina.
Why do Quiroga’s stpries take place in a tropical jungle
Quiroga lived in an area of northern Argentina that is mostly a tropical jungle, and many of his stories are set there as a result.
Quiroga had a turbulent life, and many of his writings reflect themes of
violence and death.
Quiroga’s work has been compared to that of Edgar Allan Poe
In fact, his work has been compared to that of Edgar Allan Poe, as both authors weave terror, horror, and mystery into their narratives. Quiroga was also fond of surprise endings, which Poe appreciated as well.
Cuentos de la selva,
My favorite work of Quiroga, Cuentos de la selva, was published in 1918. The stories in this collection are more like fables in which the main characters are animals. There is always a lesson to be learned in these stories. They are both funny and warm, and this is probably one of Quiroga’s most popular works.
What did Quiroga do
Quiroga, who died in 1937, was a playwright, a poet, and a short story writer, and his works continue to fascinate and entertain readers today.
the poet Alfonsina Storni
Alfonsina Storni was born in 1892 in Switzerland, but her family moved to Argentina in 1896.
Alfonsina Storni
early life
Storni worked largely in her family’s businesses—a brewery and then a café. But after those businesses failed, she went to work in another brewery and became the main source of income for her family.
What influenced her poetry
Storni moved to Buenos Aires to escape scandal because she gave birth to a son and did not wish to reveal the identity of her child’s father, who was married at the time. It is these experiences as a single mother that influenced her poetry and writing.
Alfonsina Storni onwomens rights
She continued to publish essays on women’s rights, the right to vote, and women’s struggles for equality in society. In her other writings, she expressed struggles over love and was especially critical of the societal standards that men placed on women. She continued to write poetry throughout her life until having a nervous breakdown and then becoming ill with cancer.
