How is a Quincha traditonally made
Traditionally, building a quincha home was a community affair. All the families in an area were called together for a junta de embarre, or what we would call a house-raising.
Quincha
Quincha is a type of construction used for building homes that is still used by native people in South America and Panamá.
What is Quincha made out of
Quincha consists of a frame made of canes, straw, or thick, bamboo-type reeds, covered over with mud. The roofs of these houses are usually made of baked mud tiles, zinc, or thatch.
What is Quincha like today
Today, neighbors and family still maintain the tradition in some areas, especially in the Azuero region and the provincial capitals. Many countries are divided into provinces, rather than states, and each of these provinces has its own capital city.
process of bulding Quincha
Weeks before the date set for building, community members search for materials, including wood, reeds, vines, and straw. On the big day, they build a frame using the wood, bamboo, and vines. Water is added to mud, while the men link their arms together and stomp on it until it’s properly mixed. Then they chop straw, which they moisten and lay over the mud. The straw is also mixed in for the right consistency.
Once the mixture achieves the correct degree of hardness, people pitch in to carry it to the site of the house, where the more experienced builders place it carefully all over the frame to make the walls of the house. Later, the roof will be added and the walls will be whitewashed or painted with commercial paint. But first, it’s time to eat, drink, and celebrate together. The people who just took part in the junta de embarre go around the town dancing and singing. It’s a time of shared celebration after long hours of shared work.
tradtion of Quincha today
Although this social tradition is much rarer than it used to be, the town of Macaracas in the province of Los Santos revives its memory every year at its yearly Canajagua Folkloric Gathering, with neighbors pitching in to build a home for a lucky family.
Panamá is home to a variety of indigenous groups which still maintain many of their ancestral customs. Who are the Wounaan
The Wounaan are semi-nomads who live in the forests of the South. They move from place to place, planting and harvesting maize, banana, cane, yucca, plaintains, and beans. The men are in charge of planting, and the women collect the harvest and also weave traditional baskets.
