Q

How did the Spanish come to be?

A

The Romans ruled Hispania for many years, and during that time, they had a lot of contact with the natives who lived there. The Romans spoke a language called Latin, and the people in Hispania spoke their own native languages. However, as the people of Hispania began to interact with Roman traders, settlers, politicians, and soldiers, they began to learn some Latin as well. When the people of Hispania mixed their native languages with the Latin language, the result was several different languages. One of them, Castilian, became the basis for what we know today as modern Spanish. That is why the Spanish language is also called castellano in addition to español.
