In the Spanish-speaking world, family is extremely important. Family members spend plenty of time together at various events and gatherings, such as birthday celebrations and anniversaries.

Religion is also an important part of family life in the Spanish-speaking world. Many of the family celebrations began as religious observances and milestones, such as baptism and first communion, as well as bar and bat mitzvahs.

One major celebration is the quinceañera, or the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday as a recognition of her becoming an adult.

It’s not uncommon in the Spanish-speaking world for family members to address close friends of the family as tía, or aunt, or tío, which means uncle.

Another of my favorite places is the beautiful road called Malecón. This is a road built on top of a seawall that was originally constructed in 1901. It stretches along the coast of the Havana Harbor.
