What to do when plural refers to 2 or more nouns of different genders
When the plural refers to two or more nouns of different genders, the masculine plural is used. For example, the Spanish word for female dog is la perra and the word for male dog is el perro, but for a group of mixed-gender dogs, the masculine form, los perros, is used.
A few nouns are “compound nouns,” meaning they are formed by combining two words into one.
abre + latas = abrelatas / open + cans = can opener
The plural of compound nouns is formed by changing the el to los and la to las.
