The zoo itself was built to help foster education and research, and the zoo has many programs and educational partnerships in zoology, botany, and ecology.

Many of the zoo’s animals come from Africa and Los Estados Unidos.

There are some animals, such as the endangered Solenodon, that only live in la República Dominicana and Haiti.

He was then appointed as the Director of the Instituto de Investigaciones Botánicas y Zoológicas at the university in Santo Domingo, a position which he held until his death in 2013.
