A

A regionalism is a word or phrase that’s found only in a particular region. In another region, or another country, an entirely different word might be used.

Give an example of a regionalism

A

For example, a bus is called autobús in Spain, camión in Mexico, colectivo or ómnibus in Argentina, bus in Colombia, and guagua in Cuba and the Canary Islands. All of these words share the same meaning, so choosing which one to use just depends on where you’re from or to whom you’re talking.

Catalán is spoken in Catalonia, Basque is spoken in the Basque country, and Galician is spoken in Galicia. Modern Spanish originated from ancient Castilian, the language spoken in the Spanish region of Castile, which evolved to become the Castilian Spanish spoken now. These unique languages are part of Spain’s culture. They’re spoken and written in everyday life, and taught in school.
