Unit 2 Lesson 6: Model Versus Real Life Flashcards

1
Q

Why do scientists use models

A

Scientists use models to help explain things that are complicated to understand or hard to observe. For instance, a doctor may use a model of a brain to show where an athlete has an injury. Models can also be used to represent things that are too big or too small to see. It is impossible to observe the entire planet Earth at once, even for someone in space, but they can use maps and globes as models to help explain different phenomena. Astronomers use models of the solar system to show how the planets rotate around the sun.

Q

Is it possible to see the enitre carbon cycle at once

A

The carbon cycle is the movement of carbon and its related molecules through different spheres of Earth. This complicated event takes place on a planetary scale. Trying to see the entire cycle at once is impossible. Scientists have developed a usable model of the carbon cycle that breaks down how carbon moves into individual spheres as well as the connections as carbon moves from one sphere to the other.

Q

The carbon cycle involves the movement of carbon between four main reservoirs. These include the:

A
  • atmosphere
  • oceans
  • sediments
  • terrestrial biosphere

Q

What is ceullar respiration

A

Cellular respiration is another process that demonstrates a pathway of the carbon cycle in living things. This process shows sugars being broken down to produce chemical energy

Q

What is a limitation of using a model to show the process of cellular respiration?

A

A model of cellular respiration can only show representations of the biochemical processes. It does not show the actual conversions and energy production that is taking place within the mitochondria.

Q

What parts would be included in a basic model showing the cycling of carbon from photosynthesis?

A

The simple model would show the sun, a plant, carbon dioxide, and water entering the plant and oxygen being released. It would also have some mention of the glucose produced during the process.

Q

What would be a benefit of using a model to show the process of photosynthesis?

A

Since photosynthesis is such a complicated process, using a model would allow for it to be shown in a more understandable fashion, as well as simulating how the different parts of the process fit together.
