Unit 1 - LAA1 - The Role of Cognitive Scripts Flashcards
What is meant by a cognitive script?
knowledge on how social situations play out
What is the term for “knowledge of how social situations play out”
Cognitive scripts
What are cognitive scripts also know as?
Memory scripts
What does a cognitive script include?
Knowledge of what we expect to happen, how we should behave and consequences of our behaviour
What is the term for knowledge of what we expect to happen?
Schema
How are our cognitive scripts developed?
through experience
What can inform our cognitive script?
Our experiences
Do we have control over our schemas/ cognitive scripts?
no it acts out of our awareness
If cognitive scripts act out of our awareness, what does that mean?
we have no control over our cognitive process
What are the features of memory scripts?
- They are broken down into scenes by time
- They concern multiple goals
- They are dynamic and evolve with experience
- They are influenced by culture
- We remember events that are consistent (match our schema) or inconsistent (stand out or go against our schema)
Give an example of how cognitive scripts are broken down into scenes
you enter the restaurant first, go to the reception, go to your seats etc.
Give and example of how cognitive scripts have multiple goals
I.e. to satisfy hunger
Give an example of how cognitive scripts evolve with experience
the more people and situations we come across the more our schema’s adapt
Give an example of how cognitive scripts are influence by our culture
in Japan there are restaurants where you sit by yourself
Give an example of how cognitive scripts are influenced by memory
we remember events that are consistent (match our schema) or inconsistent (stand out or go against our schema)
How do cognitive scripts influence the perception of people?
When you meet someone, you immediately make assumptions about their character based on what you see
How do our cognitive scripts work when we meet someone knew?
We draw information from our memory to guide our behaviour
What is a person schema?
organised knowledge and expectations about other peoples personalities
What is the term for the organised knowledge and expectations about other peoples personalities?
person schema
What can influence a person schema?
past experience with different people and stereotypes
How does person perception work?
When meeting someone knew, rather than perceiving them as an individual with their own unique combination of traits
What is a benefit of using person perception?
it speeds up cognitive processing as it fills in gaps in our knowledge
What is a weakness of person perception?
it is not accurate as it is based on our own cognitive biases
