types of transfer Flashcards
what is positive transfer
when a previously learnt skill has beneficial effect upon another skill
what is an example of positive transfer
throwing a ball indentical to an overhead clear in badminton as you have the core overarm motor program
what are the components for positive transfer to occur
the skills must be similar in structure
situation and context needs to be clear
what is negative transfer
occurs when the learning of one skill inhibits/hinders the learning of an additional skill
an example of negative transfer
a golfer who hits the ball with a straight arm struggles to play a cover drive in cricket (bent arm)
a netball player might not dribble when playing basketball because they transfer the static footwork rule across 2 sports
what is bilateral transfer
the transfer of skills from one side of the body to the opposite side
what is an example of bilateral transfer
learning how to kick a football with your left foot and then transferring it to your right foot
learning how to throw right handed and then transferring it to the left hand
what is zero transfer
occurs when there are no similarities between the task therefore no effect on either skill
what is an example of zero transfer
football free kick and a golf swing
what do coaches need to consider for positive transfer (5)
ensure the performers first skill is grooved
highlight the potential for transfer
ensure the practice environment for both skills is similar
make practice sessions as close to the game situation as possible
give praise, reinforcement and rewards when positive transfer takes place
what do coaches need to consider for negative transfer (3)
ensure the first skill is grooved before the second is presented
highlight the differences in the skills therefore the potential for transfer
ensure that the performer understands all of the components of the skill
