memory models Flashcards
who created the working memory model
baddley and hitch
what are the components of the working memory model
central executive, phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, episodic buffer
what does the central executive do
the control centre of the wmm, it uses the 3 other systems to control what goes in and out of the memory system and will send info to one of the 3 sub systems, it directs attention but does not store info
what does the visuospatial sketchpad do
used to temporarily store info (visual and spatial)
visual cache: form and colour
inner scribe: spatial and movement info
used to get a feel for the skill whilst performing
why is the inner scribe important
most important for sport as it gives a picture of the performance and what to change
what does the phonological loop do
deals with auditory info and helps produce a memory trace, words from coach are used to create an initial picture of the skill or mental image (mental trace), this is sent to ltm to trigger motor programme which is used to produce movement
what does the episodic buffer do
coordinated info from pl and vss into sequences in the stm to be sent to the ltm to get a bttter picture of the skill requirement
what influences the quality of retention and retrieval
rehearsal, meaningfulness, speed of learning, over learning
strategies to improve stm
chunking/chaining, association, mental rehearsal, rewards
what is the short term sensory store
large capacity
temporary store for all incoming info
it lasts there for bout half a second
sa takes place and if the info it useful it will be encoded
what is the short term memory store
it is the working memory- what we are thinking about at any given moment in time.
it is the conscious memory
retained for up to 30 seconds and is limited to 7+/- items = taxi rank theory
what is the long term memory
well learned past experiences
almost limitless capacity and duration
is used to compare against new experiences
also stores responses used in different situations.
retrieval is used to get it back into stm
describe the role of the VSS and PL in the wmm (2)
VSS- responsible for manipulating visual images
PL- deals with spoken and written material
which component of wmm coordinates sight hearing movement info into sequences to be sent to ltm (1)
episodic buffer
which subsystem of the wmm deal with auditory info from the senses to help produce a memory trace (1)
phonological loop
