Tranexamic Acid Classfication?
Antifibrinolytics
Tranexamic Acid Mechanism?
Inhibitis TPA which stops plasminogin from binding to fibrin thereby inhibiting fibrinolysis.
Tranexamic Acid Indications?
Hemorrhagic shock
Tranexamic Acid Contraindications?
-Injury time > 3 hours
-Pregnancy
Known history of thromboembolic disease (DVT, PE, etc.)
-Use of anticoagulants (warfarin, lovenox, etc.)
-Hemophilia
Tranexamic Acid Side Effects/Precautions?
-Abdominal or stomach pain, discomfort, or tenderness.
-chills or fever.
-difficulty with moving.
-headache, severe and throbbing.
-joint or back pain.
-muscle aching or cramping.
-muscle pains or stiffness.
Tranexamic Acid Adult Dose?
Loading: 1 g in 100 ml NS over 10 minutes
Maintenance: 1 g over 8 hours
Tranexamic Acid Pediatric Dose?
Not recommended. Safety not established.
Tranexamic Acid Onset of Action?
5-10 minutes

2-5 hours
