Loop diuretic
Furosemide Mechanism?
inhibits tubular reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the proximal and distal tubules and the thick ascending loop of Henle by inhibiting the sodium-chloride cotransport system resulting in excessive excretion of water along with sodium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium.

Furosemide Indications?
CHF and pulmonary edema caused by hypervolemia
Furosemide Contraindications?
-Hypersensitivity
-Hypovolemia
-Anuria
-Electrolyte deficiencies, most notably hypokalemia
Furosemide Side Effects/Precautions?
-Hypotension
-Electrolyte deficiencies
-Nausea/vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Muscle cramps
-Metabolic alkalosis
Furosemide Adult Dose?
40 mg or twice the patients prescribed daily dose, max 80 mg slow IVP
Furosemide Pediatric Dose?
Not Recommended
Furosemide Onset of Action?
5 minutes
Furosemide Duration of Action?
4-6 hours
