Calcium Gluconate Mechanism?
Direct replacment of elemental calcium. Using the body’s normal metabolic processes, it can help to overcome calcium channel blocker toxicity and can raise the action potential threshold for cardiac contracting cells which can help to regulated some dysrhymthias. Increases inotropic force and ventriculary automaticity. Binds with flouride ions to prevent addtional tissue intrusion.
Calcium Gluconate Indications?
- Hypocalcemia
- Hyperkalemia
- Hypermagnesemia
- Beta-blocker toxicity
- Calcium channel blocker toxicity
- Abdominal muscle spasm from Brown Recluse Spider or Man of War Jellyfish
- Hydrofluoric acid burn
Calcium Gluconate Contraindications?
- Hypercalcemia
- VF
- Digitalis toxicity
Calcium Gluconate Side Effects/Precautions?
- Vascular spasm
- Peripheral vasodilation
- Syncope
- Dysrhythmia
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
Calcium Gluconate Adult Dose?
2g IVP over 5 minutes
Calcium Gluconate Pediatric Dose?
60-100mg/kg IVP over 5 minutes

Immediate
Calcium Gluconate Duration of Action?
30 minutes to 2 hours
Calcium Gluconate Max Dose Adult/Pediatric?
Both Adult & Ped: 2g
Calcium Gluconate Routes of Administration?
IV/IO. Topical water soluble gel mix (75-100mL) application in the case of burns.
