Tetracaine Mechanism?
Sodium channel blocker. Stabilizes the neuronal membrane by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of pain impulses, thus causing local anesthetic action
Tetracaine Indications?
- Pain control for chemical burn to eyes
- Facilitate insertion of Morgan lens
Tetracaine Contraindications?
- Penetrating trauma to globe of eye
- Allergy to proparacaine/novocaine
Tetracaine Side Effects/Precautions?
Stinging, ocular irritation, redness, delayed ocular wound healing
Tetracaine Adult Dose?
1-2 drops 0.5% solution every 5-10min
Tetracaine Pediatric Dose?
1-2 drops 0.5% solution every 5-10min
Tetracaine Onset of Action?
30 seconds IV; 3-4 minutes IM
Tetracaine Duration of Action?
10-15 minutes
Tetracaine Max Dose Adult/Pediatric?
Adults & Peds: 6 drops/eye
