Tongue Flashcards
what do most muscles of the tongue attach to?
Most muscles serve to attach one bone, usually via a tendon, to another
which muscles of the tongue do not attach to bones?
the ocular muscles, the scapulothoracic joint, the diaphragm and perineum
what are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue attached to?
other structures in the tongue
how are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue named?
by the direction in which they travel:
superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, transverse and vertical muscles of the tongue
what are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Genioglossus
Hyoglossus
Styloglossus
Palatoglossus
function of genioglossus?
Inferior fibres protrude the tongue,
middle fibres depress the tongue,
superior fibres draw the tip back and down
function of hyoglossus?
Depresses and retracts the tongue
function of styloglossus?
Retracts and elevates the tongue
function of palatoglossus?
Elevates the posterior aspect of the tongue
innervation of muscles of the tongue?
All of the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles are innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
which nerve innervates palatoglossus?
vagal innervation (CN X)
what is the tongue attached anteroinferiorly by?
frenulum
a piece of CT lying in midline
how is frenulum formed?
sculpting apoptosis (like fingers)
what happens if frenulum fails to form by sculpting apoptosis?
result in excess frenulum ‘tongue-tied’
managed by surgery
In the anterior ⅔, general sensation is supplied by?
the trigeminal nerve (V)
Specifically the lingual nerve, a branch of the mandibular nerve (CN V3)
