cervical plexus block
what happens in a cervical plexus block?
anaesthetic is injected along posterior border of SCM at junction of superior and middle 1/3s
what is the nerve point of the neck?
junction where cutaneous branches of cervical plexus emerge
where anaesthetic is injected in cervical plexus block
when is a cervical plexus nerve block not carried out?
on patients with pulmonary or cardiac problems
why is a cervical plexus nerve block not carried out on patients with pulmonary or cardiac problems?
high risk of damaging phrenic nerve
why is the EJV vulnerable to damage?
superficial course down the neck
what happens if the EJV is severed e.g. knife injury?
lumen held open by thick layer of investing layer of fascia
what happens when lumen of EJV is held open by thick layer of investing fascia?
air will be drawn into vein - producing cyanosis
can stop blood flowing to right atrium
(medical emergency)
how do you manage severance to EJV?
apply pressure to wound
stop bleeding and entry of air
