Cranial nerves - modalities Flashcards
how can each cranial nerve be described simplistically?
as sensory, motor or both
how can each cranial nerve be described more specifically?
transmit 7 types of information, 3 are unique to cranial nerves (SSS, SVS, SVM)
what are the 4 sensory (afferent) modalities?
general somatic sensory (GSS)
general visceral sensory (GVS)
special somatic sensory (SSS)
special visceral sensory (SVS)
what is the general somatic sensory (GSS) afferent modality for?
general sensation from skin
what is the general visceral sensory (GVS) afferent modality for?
general sensation from viscera
what is the special somatic sensory (SSS) afferent modality for?
senses derived from ectoderm (sight, sound, balance)
what is the special visceral sensory (SVS) afferent modality for?
senses derived from endoderm (taste)
what are the 3 motor (efferent) modalities?
general somatic motor (GSM)
general visceral motor (GVM)
special visceral motor (SVM)
what links to general somatic motor (GSM)? - efferent
skeletal muscles
what links to general visceral motor (GVM)? - efferent
smooth muscles of gut and autonomic motor
what links to special visceral motor (SVM)? - efferent
muscles derived from pharyngeal arches
