larynx: glottis Flashcards
where is supraglottis?
from inferior surface of epiglottis to vestibular fold (false chords)
what does the supraglottis contain?
hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage
where is the glottis?
true vocal cords (1cm inferiorly project)
where is subglottis?
from glottis (true vocal cords) to inferior border of cricoid cartilage (around C6)
where do the elastic vocal ligaments extend?
anteriorly: thyroid cartilage
posterior: vocal process of arytenoids cartilage (control vocal cords)
forms submucosal skeleton for vocal cords
what forms in between the elastic vocal ligaments?
rima glottis (opening of vocal cords, airways) in between the 2 elastic vocal ligaments
function of vocal cords? what do they contain?
control sound production
each contains a vocal ligament and vocalis muscle (lateral to vocal ligaments, deep part of thyroarytenoid muscle)
which muscle carries out ABduction of the vocal cords?
posterior cricoarytenoid
which muscle carries out ADduction of the vocal cords?
Lateral cricoarytenoid
what are muscles of the vocal cords lined by?
stratified squamous epithelium (prevent abrasion from food)
where do the mucosal lining from the epiglottis attach?
just superior to the true vocal cords (produce false vocal cords, in supraglottis region)
what do the glottis make up?
the vocal folds and processes
together with rima glottidis (opening)
what does the shape of rima glottidis vary according to?
position of the vocal cords
describe the shape of rima glottis during breathing, forced respiration and phonation
breathing: partially open
forced respiration: wide open
phonation: varies in shape
