The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the order of the cell cycle?
Interphase (G1,S1,G2), mitosis, cytokinesis
What happens in prophase?
Chromatin shortens and condenses
Centrioles move to poles of cell
Nucleolus and nuclear envelope break down
Spindle fibres produced
What happens in Metaphase
Spindle fibres attach to centromere
Chromatids align on equator of cell
What happens in Anaphase
Chromatids pulled apart from the centromere
Pulled to piles of cell
Evident from V shape of chromatids
What happens in Telophase
Spindle fibres disconnect and break down
Nucleolus and nuclear envelope reappear
Chromatids unravel into chromatin
What happens in cytokinesis
Cell cytoplasm divides
What happens in interphase
Duplication of DNA and Cell organelles
What is cell division in prokaryotic cells
Binary Fission
Why can’t viruses perform cell division on their own?
They are acellular so they must hijack living cells and inject nucleus acid into the host.
What are the types of Cancer
Malignant
Benign
Characteristics of a malignant tumour
Grow rapidly
Less compact
Life threatening
Characteristics of a benign tumour
Grow slowly
More compact
Less life threatening
How does cancer treatment affect cancerous cells?
Prevents DNA from replicating during interphase
or
Inhibits metaphase by interfering with spindle formation
Why does hair fall out during cancer treatment?
Cancer drugs affect rapidly dividing cells (cancer cells) but due to hair cells rapidly diving, they are killed.
