Defence mechanisms Flashcards
Immunity
The body being better prepared for a second infection of the same pathogen
What are the 2 body responses to a pathogen
Specific
Non-specific
What is the non-specific response
Response is immediate and the same
Physical barrier + phagocytosis
What is the specific response
Response is slower and specific to each pathogen
Cell mediated response
Humoral response
How is the bodies own cells recognised
Each cell contains specific proteins on membrane to distinguish.Used to identify pathogens, non self material, toxins and abnormal body cells
How do lymphocytes recognise cells belonging to body (fetus)
Lymphocytes constantly collide with self-material cells, placenta and mother prevent infection
If lymphocyte binds to any of body’s proteins, they are suppressed or die
How do lymphocytes recognise cells belonging to body (adult)
Lymphocytes produced in bone marrow initially only encounter self antigens
If show immune response to self antigens, undergo apoptosis (cell death) before they mature
