Gas Exchange in fish Flashcards
Describe structure of gill
gill filaments stacked up on top of each other with gill lamellae at right angles to the filaments to increase the surface area
Hill filaments and lamellar have good blood supply
Describe the flow of water through a fish
taken in at the mouth, forced over the gills, leaves from an opening in the side of the body Gases are exchanged between the water and the blood vessels in the gills.
What is countercurrent flow in gills?
when the flow of water over the gills and the flow of blood within them are in opposite directions
Why is counter current flow used in fish
Rate of gas exchange is increased because counter-current flow maintains a diffusion gradient between the water and the blood over the whole length of the gill
