Protein synthesis Flashcards
What is the 3 stages in proteinsynthesis
Transcription
Splicing
Translation
Translation
mRNA travels to ribosome
Ribosome reads mRNA codons from the start codon
tRNA molecules with complementary anti codon brings an amino acid to the ribosome
This pairs with the codon on the mRNA
Another tRNA molecule brings the next amino acid according to the next mRNA codon
Peptide bonds form between amino acids (requires energy)
This continues until a stop codon is reached
Transcription
DNA helo case breaks H bonds between DNA strands
Complementary RNA nucleotides form H bonds with antisense strand/ template strand
RNA polymerase joins RNA nucleotides via condensation reactions forming phosphodiester bonds
Continues until end of gene reached
Pre - mRNA formed
RNA polymerase detaches from DNA, reverts back into double helix
Splicing
Introns are non coding, exons are coding
Introns removed from pre-mRNA
Ends of extrinsic connected
Does not occur in prokaryotic cells
