Population genetics + variation Flashcards
What is a gene pool
All the alleles of all the genes of all the individuals in a population at a given time.
What is allelic frequency?
The number of times an allele occurs within the gene pool
What is the Hardy Weinberg principle
Math equation that calculates frequency of alleles of a particular gene in a population
What are the 5 conditions of using the hardy weinberg principle
No mutations can occur
No flow of alleles in or out of the population
No selection
Large population
Mating is random
What are the 2 hardy weinberg equations
p + q = 1
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
What 3 genetic factors cause genetic variation?
Mutations
Meiosis
Random fertilisation of gametes
What other factors can cause variation?
Environmental influences
For example, a plant that is genetically determined to grow tall may not grow tall due to the lack of nutrients in the soil
