Bohr effect Flashcards
1
Q
Describe and explain bohr effect
A
Haemoglobin affinity for O2 decreased in presence of CO2
CO2 increases blood acidity so tertiary structure and shape change occurs
Oxygen less readily loads and more readily unloads
At gas exchange surfaces, little CO2 so affinity for O2 is high and loads more readily
At respiring tissue, CO2 conc is high so O2 unloads more readily
2
Q
How are animals adapated to environment in terms of haemoglobin
A
Animals in envrionment with low PPO2 will have haemoglobin with high O2 affinity
Curve is to the left
Allows fully saturated Haemoglobin at low partial pressure of O2
