Stem Cells and Totipotency Flashcards
True or False? All cells contain the exact same genes.
True
True or False? All cells express all of their genes.
False
What are totipotent cells?
Cells that can mature into any body cell
What ways are genes prevented from being expressed?
Preventing translation
preventing transcription
What are the 4 sources of stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells
Umbillical cord blood stem cells
Placental stem cells
Adult stem cells ( found in body tissues of organism, not just adult)
What are the types of stem cells?
Totipotent stem cells
Pluripotent stem cells
Multipotent stem cells
Unipotent stem cells
What are Pluripotent stem cells?
Stem cells found in embryos that can differentiate into almost any cell
What are multipotent stem cells?
Stem cells found in adults and differentiate into a limited number of cells
What are unipotenet stem cells
Stem cells that can differentiate only into one type of cell
What is an induced pluripotent stem cell? (iPS)
A type of pluripotent cell that is produced from a unipotenent stem cell
How are iPS cells made?
By switching on and expressing the previously inactivated genes
Why may iPS be more beneficial to use in research then embryonic stem cells?
iPS is capable of self renewal
Eliminates ethical problems with using embryos
How can iPS be used?
Aid regrowing damaged tissue from accident or disease
Regenerate b cells for diabetes
Heart cells from consequence of heart attack
