Competition Flashcards
What are the 2 types of competition
Intraspecific
Interspecific
What is Intraspecific competition
Individuals of the same species compete for resources
What is interspecific Competition
Individuals of different species compete for resources
Characteristics of Intraspecific
Availability of resources will determine the ultimate population size
Population increases until carrying capacity reached
Low resources will reduce carrying capacity and thus population size
Characteristics of Interspecific
Species better adapted with more offspring, perhaps larger and can withstand drought will survive
Applies to competitive exclusive principle
What is the Competitive exclusive principle
Where 2 species are competing for limited resources, the one which uses the resources more effectively will ultimately eliminate the other.
