Test 2: lecture 24: eyelids Flashcards
palpebrae
eyelids
sensation to eyelid is by — nerve
CV 5
what is inside an eyelid
haired skin
muscle: orbicularis oculi
modified sebaceous glands (meobomian glands)
fibrous tarsal plate- supports the eyelid
skin on inside of eyelid is called
palpebral conjunctiva
eyelid function to — the eye
protect and maintain ocular surface health
remove debris, produce secretions, tear film distribution
closure of eyelid is by what muscle
orbicularis oclui (CN7)
opening on eyelid is by what muscle
levator palpebral superioris
CN3
when do eyelids open in dogs and cats
10-14 days
failure to open eyelid
ankyloblepharon
bacteria can pool under eyelid and cause injection or conjunctivitis
ophthalmia neonatorum
how to fix eyelid laceration
fix ASAP- do not allow healing by second intention
close in two layers and use figure 8 knot to prevent knot on ocular surface
why don’t eyelids get infected post op
very good blood supply
can use topical antibiotics
blepharospasm
squinting of lids secondary to pain
eyelid margin rolled inward
entropion
eyelid margin rolls outward
ectropion
drooping of eyelid
ptosis
what is trichiasis
normally placed hairs, touching the eyeball
usually from eyelid rolling inward (entropion) or drooping (ptosis)
how to treat entropion in a sharpea
pups will have eyelids tacked until full grown then surgery is done if needed
ways to treat entropion
lubricate
tack- temporary, young dogs
surgery
hotz celsus technique
used for entropion- pulls eyelid away from eye
distichiasis
cilia (eyelashes) growing out of wrong place (meibomian glands)
ectopic cilia
eyelashed that come through conjunctiva (inside of eyelid)
usually cause ulcers
how to treat distichiasis
eyelashes growing out of glands and touching eyeball
plucked out
cryotherapy- cause necrosis of hair follicle (30% regrowth)
most eyelid tumors in young dogs are
benign
papilloma or histiocytoma
most eyelid tumors in older dogs are
benign
meibomian gland adenoma
eyelid tumors in cats are —
usually more aggressive/malignant
usually benign in dogs
young dog- how to treat
papilloma/histiocytoma
will usually regress on their own
may need surgery if causing symptoms- corneal ulcers
how to remove small eyelid tumors
wedge/house resection
full thickness
2 layer closure
send for pathology: normally benign in dogs
do not FNA- go right to surgery
how to treat large eye lid tumor, bigger then 1/3 eyelid length
FNA if possible
remove and reconstruct with skin graft
born without part of eyelid or missing eyelid margin
eyelid agenesis
congenital, common in cats
eyelid agensis will cause
no eyelid
can’t blink and loss of sebaceous glands leads to inflammation of the cornea (keratitis)
hair gets into eye (trichiasis)
tearing
how to treat eyelid agenesis
can freeze away hair
can form rotational flap to form new eyelid
dermoid
haired skin growing on eyeball
can usually dissect out
H arry, 6 year-older border collie ran through barbed wire fence last week.
Q1. will you stay late on a Friday night to repair this, or have Harry return on Monday morning for surgery?
Q2. what suture technique will you use to ensure that the lower lid margin is aligned?
eyelid: fix ASAP
use 2 layer figure 8 suture
— is inflammation of the eyelid
blepharitis
what causes blepharitis
inflammation of eyelid:
infection: bacterial
sebaceous overproduction
scabies or demodex
immune mediated
drug reaction
food allergy
NOT surgical, refer to derm- antibiotics, anti-inflamatory drops, steroids
