TB 99 RIVER RESCUE FIRST RESPONDER Flashcards
TB 99 RIVER RESCUE FIRST RESPONDER
The most alarming part of this statistic is the fact that up to _______ of these drownings are “would-be” rescuers.
one-third

We must remember that self-rescue is the priority.
Rescue of our teammates is second.
rescue of the victim is the final outcome.

The victim shall then utilize a ferry angle (angling their body 45 degrees against the current with the head pointing toward the “target” river bank).

Tension Diagonal
Although this may be performed with an inflated fire hose, increased results have been seen with tensioned lines.
just off the water
The tension diagonal is generally a rope which is tensioned across a channel at a downstream angle of no more than 45 degrees to the current flow or vector.
It should be emphasized that this need not be a high tension system. If the angle is set correctly a simple mechanical advantage system for tensioning is sufficient (i.e., 3:1 system, trucker’s hitch, etc.).

Due to this hazard, specialized protective gear
is mandatory for rescuers in two cases:
l. In any position where an inadvertent action may cause a member to fall into the water (e.g., sloped banks of tapered channels).
2. In all cases where a member is WITHIN ___ FEET OF THE WATER.
