TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES Flashcards
TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
Light Rail Vehicles (LVR) consists of track and stations that are fed electrically by a Catenary System as opposed to a third rail system like the Red/Purple line.
The 34.5 kV AC is converted by a transformer/rectifier to 750-volt DC and fed through the Pantograph via Catenary lines in order to operate passenger vehicles.

Milepost markers are used throughout the rail network and are marked not to exceed distances of more than 1/10 mile.

Emergency Walkways have a substantially flat surface for passengers and emergency personnel to use if needed; with a width of at least ___”.
30 inches

What channels work in metro rail tunnels?
(2, 4, 6, 7, 12, 15, 16, and 17).
TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
Cross passages are located about every ___’ throughout the tunnel.
A red exit sign will identify each cross passage.
750

Fire Hose Cabinets will be distributed throughout each station and are outfitted with 100’ of 1 1⁄2” rubber-lined hose and a spray nozzle, a 2 1⁄2” Fire Department outlet, and a ___ BC dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher.

Dry standpipes
At elevated stations, they are usually at, or near, the ends of the platforms, and not greater than ___’ apart.
200
TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
6” pipe will supply the station, as well as the segment of the tunnel that is either upstream or downstream. Every 250 – 300’ throughout the tunnel, 2 1⁄2” outlets are provided at track level and at all cross passages.

The maximum operating length of a train is three LRV’s coupled for a resulting length of ___’, with three pantographs, one for each LRV.

The Under-Car Deluge System is activated by
depressing a button located at the end of the platform at each Blue Light Station. This same action will de-energize the Overhead Catenary (OC) line in that section.

Light Rail enclosed system stations, system underground or enclosed trainways greater than 1,000 feet (Gold Line 1st Street Tunnel and stations) are equipped with Emergency Ventilation fans that work in various configurations based on train location, passenger evacuation direction, and Fire Department access location.

Emergency Management Panel (EMP): EMP’s are similar to Annunciator Panels.
All Light Rail Tunnel EMP’s are located either on the concourse (mezzanine) level, or outside the station entrance at the street level.

Separate mains supply the tunnel/station complex. Throughout the entire tunnel, 2 1⁄2” outlets are provided at track level every 250’ and include an audio jack for a sound-powered phone.

The Department of Water and Power Vault, equipped with a _______ system only.
______ fire sprinklers protect the Auxiliary Power Rooms.

TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
Be advised that exiting requirements as we have become accustomed to them in the fire service do not apply in aerial Guideways or stations. Passengers are not required to be taken to a public way. The criterion is to bring passengers to a Point-of-Safety.

The “Light Rail” Vehicle (LRV) is an articulated (flexible in center), six-axle rail vehicle, with an operating cab at each end allowing for bi-directional movement. The ends of a LRV are referred to as the “A” and “B” ends.
The designation “A” end is merely the end of the vehicle, which serves as the point of attachment for the Pantograph.

Each car is 90’ long and approximately 9’ wide. The height, measured from the top of the tracks to the roof of the train, is 11 1/2’. Its maximum height of 23’ 6” is reached when the Pantograph is fully extended.
From the floor of the car to the railroad bed is 39”. The maximum capacity of each car is 237 passengers.
When filled to capacity, 157 passengers will be standing and 76 passengers will be seated.

Activating the door release (by pulling down on the handle) will relieve air pressure from the latching mechanism, allowing the door to be manually opened. A four-to-five second delay will occur before the doors can be opened; this is due to the rate of air pressure escaping the system.

All interior and exterior windows are made of polycarbonate (Lexan) material. Entry through these windows may be gained by using a rotary saw (with carbide tip blade) or by removing the weather stripping around the window.

The Pantograph is extended less than ____ pounds of spring pressure and can be lowered electronically from the Operator’s cab or manually via a foot pump. The pump is located under the second forward-facing seat (left side) of the car’s “A” section.

TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
When manually lowering the Pantograph, listen for the lock to “click.” Failure to engage the lock by fully lowering the Pantograph will allow the spring tension to raise the
Pantograph once again and cause the vehicle to become re-energized. If multiple vehicles are coupled together, the Pantograph on all vehicles must be lowered.

The height of the Overhead Catenary System varies from ___ to ___.
18’ to 22’
TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
Notable indications that the pantographs are lowered include “shut-down” of the air conditioning unit and reduction of the passenger compartment “lighting” intensity.

TB 70 METRO LIGHT RAIL LINES
“Caution!!!”, after the pantograph has been lowered, do not climb on top of the LRV “A” section in and about the pantograph, as the LRV has capacitors. The bleed down resistors short out the capacitors to deenergize the pantograph area, however, all circuits must be functioning properly for that to occur. It is recommended that you wait ___ to ___ minutes prior to working on the roof area of any pantograph”.

Open the compartment, remove the foot pump, place the foot pump on the floor, remove the latch, place the switch from normal to lower and begin to pump for approximately ___ to ___ pumping motions until the pantograph is down.

batteries are Nickel Cadmium located on the right side of the “B” section and identified with a decal “Battery Disconnect.”

Emergency Management Panel (EMP): EMP’s are similar to Annunciator Panels. They indicate the location (zone), nature of the alarm, status of ventilation fans if applicable (light rail tunnels over 1,000 feet), recall the elevators, and stop the escalators (downward flight only).
