The initial treatment for nerve agent exposure comes as a two-part antidote;
Atropine: To stop the effect of the nerve agent.
2-PAM CI: To restore normal function by removing the nerve agent.

Atropine should always be given first to reverse the effects of the nerve agent on the respiratory system. Since both Atropine and 2PAM CI are relatively short acting, repeated doses may be needed, especially where there is evidence of continuing absorption.

The Atropine and 2 PAM CI auto-injectors should be used by trained personnel only after the following events have occurred:
All personnel have removed themselves from the affected area and initiated emergency decontamination.
Some or all of the symptoms (moderate or severe) of nerve agent poisoning cited below are present:
AT THIS TIME, FIREFIGHTER/EMT’S MAY ONLY USE THE MARK I KITS FOR THEMSELVES OR ANTOHER MEMBER. ONLY PARAMEDICS MAY ADMINISTER MARK I KITS TO AFFECTED CIVILIANS.

Any patient sick enough to receive even one dose from the auto-injector should immediately be placed under medical observation for at least 24 hours,

Forty to sixty minutes after the intra-muscular injection of 2 PAM CI has been administered, mild to moderate pain may be experienced at the site of injection.
