Starch Glycogen Cellulose Flashcards
What is the purpose of starch and how it stores
Starch is a storage component found in plant it is stored as small grains in potato tubers and
Starch structure
Highly branched so readily hydrolyse with enzymes so that glucose can be used for respiration
Branches and allow the chain to be highly coiled and helical so compact and a lot can be stored
Insoluble so cannot dissolve so doesn’t affect water potential of the cell and cannot move out of the cell
Glycogen how is it stored
In the liver and muscles cellls as granules
Glycogen structure
It is highly branched more than starch so easily hydrolysed rapidly by enzymes so can be used for respiration
It is compact so a lot can be stored
Insoluble so cannot dissolve and affect water potential of the cell or move out of the cell
Cellulose structure
Long unbeanched chain
Made from beta glucose straight inbranched chain run parallel with cross linkages form hydrogen bonding and form microfibris give strength to the plant and resist pressure prevents bursting
Also allow the plant to remain turgid increasing the surface area for more photosynthesis
