How are triglycerides formed

A

Between glycerol molecule and a fatty acid between the hydroxyl and the carboxylic group resulting in an Easter bong

Q

What is a saturated fatty acid

A

Contain only single carbon to carbon bonds this allows packing closing together so stronger hse between molecules so usually solid in room temperature

Q

Structure of fatty acid related to its function

A

Highly energy to mass ratio so a lot of energy can be released and stored in smaller mass so easier for the organism to carry the fatty acid around
High energy ratio of carbon and hydrogen so release large amounts of energy
Large amount of hydrogen so release water which can be used for hydrolysis as well as photosynthesis
The fatty acid are insoluble so doesn’t affect water potential of the cell

Q

What are phospholipid

A

A fatty acid is replace with a phosphate group the phospholipid is hydrophlllic so when in double membrane it forms hydrophilic head and pouts outward and fatty tails onwards so polar

Q

How are phospholipids related to their function

A

The polar molecules allow positioning so tails are onwards
The hydrophilic head hold the membrane together
The phosphate allow glycoproteins and glycolipids to form
