Genetic Diversity And Adaption Flashcards
What is gene diversity
The total number of different alleles in a population
What is a population
A group of individuals of the same species that can live in the same place and can interbreed
What is a species
One or more population
What is genetic diversity dependent on
The greater number of different allele that all members of species posses the greater the genetic diversity, it is reduced when a species has fewer different alleles
What are benefits of genetic diversity
The greater the diversity the more likely that the individuals of a species will survive an environmental change as wider range of allelebprovide wider range of characteristics that may be suited to new enviroment thus it allows natural selection
Why aren’t all alleles passes on
Only certain individuals are reproductively successful and so pass on allele
Describe natural selection
The differences between the reproductive success of individuals
Within a population there will be a gene pool containing a wide variety of alleles
Random mutation within allele may make new allel
This new allele may be advantageous over other alleles in a population so they are more likely to survive and reproduce gain resources grow rapidly breed and producing more offsprings
Only those who reproduce will pass on allele to offspring
So new advantages allele will be passed onto offspring they will be more likely to survive and reproduce
This will increase the number of individuals with the new advantageous allele and the non advantageous allele will decrease
How is advantageous determined
Upon the environmental factors or conditions at any one time
