Gas Exchnge In Fish Flashcards
How are fish gills adapted for exchange
Many filaments and gills so increase the surface area for exchange of gasses
The thin walls of the lamella and capillaries short diffusion pathway
Counter current
How is mass transport and pressure maintains
The fish opening and closing the mouth maintains hydrostatic pressure which forces oxygen over the gills which lead to quicker exchange of gases
Water constantly moving over grills and blood constantly flowing through the fish body
What is counter current
Oxygen in water and blood flow in opposite direction oxygen meets blood already full with oxygen however diffusion gradient still present so diffusion still take place towards the end of the lamella most of the oxygen has diffused our however it still meets blood with lower oxygen concentration so gradient still created so exchange still takes place thus maintaingwn across the length
