Small Ruminant Mastitis Flashcards
How does SR milk compare to other species?
Higher in solids, fat, protein, ca and calories
Where does milk go through the udder? How many halves?
Secretroy alveolus -> interlobar duct -> lobar duct _> gland cistern -> annular ring -> teat cistern -> teat orfice

What kind of milk secretion cells do sheep have? Goats? What does this mean?
Sheep: Merocrine (cell intact)
Goat: Apocrine (Cell wall break off)
DNA detected by SSC test so looks like they have higher SCC
What is somatic cell count and what is it counting?
Somatic cells in ml of milk
Immune cells and milk producing cells
What is the legal limit for SCC in cattle? In small ruminants?
750,000 - cattle
1 million - sheep and goat
What kind of cells are commonly found in goat milk but not other species?
Cytoplasmic particles, epithelial cells and neutrophils
How should small ruminant producers have SSC evaluated?
With Pyronin y methly green stain or Fos somatic counters
How can they test for mastitis?
CMT
When do SS normally increase in SR?
With increasing number of parity
Increase at end lactation
increase in DIM
Breed
Onset estrus
Infection
Lentivirus
Machine milked
What categories of mastitis are there?
Subclinial, clinical , acute, chronic
Local and systemic
What causes gangrenous mastitis or blue bag? How do you treat it?
Staph, clostridium or ecoli
Looks blue and necrosed (will slough off)
-Antibiotics, amputation or euthanize
What are some agents that cause mastitis in SR?
Staph aurus
Mannhemia Haemolytica
Clostridium
E. Coli
What antibiotic would you use for mastitis gangrenous?
Penicillin, oxytet iv or nuflor
How do you know an animal has clinical mastitis?
Off color, flakes or clots, thick, swollen gland
What kind of mastitis is most prevalent in sheep and goats?
Subclinical
-Detect CMT
