What do we consider a grower/finished pig?
Grower 60lb at about 10weeks
Finisher - 275-280lbs
What are some common forms of porcine respiratory disease at this grower finisher stage?
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, pasteruella multocida, actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Swine Influenza Virus, PRRS, PCV and Ascaris Summ
What portion of the lung is affected by mycoplasma?
Cranio ventral - wont see sign until 60-70% lung affected
What is thumping a common sign of?
Influenza
What are some of the top diarrheal diseases of grower finsihers?
TGE, Salmonella, Brady Hydrosyenesteria, lawsonia, whip worms
What are some GIT conditions in grower finisher pigs?
Hemorrhagic bowel, gastric ulcers, mesentaeric torsion, ascaris summ, hemorraghic ileitis (lawsonia), rectal prolapse
What can you treat lawsonia with?
Tylasin
Is it likely you will be able to treat a prolapse? If you can how would you do it?
No
Pig whistle or band it off
Cull
What are black tary feces a sign of?
Gastric Ulcers
What are some common sin lesions of swine?
External parasites (mites and lice), insect bites (flies), sunburn, PCV lesion, pityriasis rosea, erysipelas, callus knee, abscesses, ring worm
What are some causes of lameness and locomotor lesions in grower finisher pigs?
Erypiphelas and mycoplasma OCD, OA, DJD, Laminitis, overgrown hooves and declaws, bruises, rickets, porcine stress syndrome
How can you treat OA in potbelly pigs?
Meloxicam, Adequan, Gabapentin
